Couples therapy in Copenhagen

Do you keep having the same argument? Perhaps you feel distant, miss being close, or find it hard to trust each other. You may want help before things get worse.

Couples counseling gives you time to talk with someone who can help you understand what happens between you. Your therapist helps you notice where talks break down and find new ways to respond.

You can work on conflict, trust, sex, parenting, or big life choices. You can also talk about whether to stay together. There is room for what matters to each of you.

What happens in couples therapy?

In your first couples therapy session, your therapist will ask about your relationship and what has brought you to therapy. You will each have time to share what feels hard and what you hope will change.

You may see the problem in different ways. One of you might feel ignored. The other might feel blamed or unsure how to help. Your therapist will help you explore both experiences.

Together, you will look at the patterns that keep you stuck. What starts a fight? What happens when one of you pulls away? What helps you find your way back to each other?

Therapy sessions may include guided talks and practice with new skills to improve communication. You might work on how to ask for support, listen to each other, or return to a hard topic after an argument.

What can couples therapy help with?

Couples come to therapy for many reasons, including:

  • Having the same fights without finding a way forward

  • Feeling lonely or distant from each other

  • Finding it hard to talk about sex or closeness

  • Rebuilding trust after lies or an affair

  • Disagreeing about parenting or household tasks

  • Wanting different things for the future

  • Coping with a move, work stress, or a new baby

  • Feeling unsure whether to stay together

You can seek help while problems are still small. Therapy can help you understand each other and handle stress as a team.

Support for international and mixed-culture couples

Building a life together in Denmark can put strain on a relationship. One partner may feel at home while the other is still learning Danish, looking for work, or making friends.

Living far from family can be hard too. You may have less help with your children and little time alone as a couple.

You might also have different views about money, family, holidays, or raising children. What feels normal to one of you may feel strange or hurtful to the other.

Therapy gives you time to talk about these differences. Your therapist can help you put your needs into words and work out what a shared life in Denmark means for you both.

How our couples therapists work

Our therapists draw on a range of approaches. These include the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Each therapist’s profile explains their training and how they work.

Your therapist will help you understand each other’s views and notice the patterns between you. You will agree on what you want to work towards.

Stress, past hurt, and daily habits can affect your relationship. Your therapist helps you explore your relationship dynamics: how you respond to each other, what leads to conflict, and what helps you feel close. Together, you can practise ways to improve communication and repair after arguments.

Frequently asked questions

What if one of us is unsure about therapy?

You may feel differently about starting. One of you might be hopeful, while the other feels doubtful or fears being blamed.

You can talk about those worries from the start. Both partners need to be willing to take part. It is fine to have questions about whether therapy will help.

Will the therapist take sides?

Your therapist will listen to both of you and seek to understand your experiences.

They may ask you to look at how your actions affect your partner. This can include taking responsibility for hurt and trying a new way to respond.

You will both have space to speak and be heard.

What if we are unsure whether to stay together?

You can bring that question to therapy. Tell your therapist if one of you wants to stay and the other is unsure.

Your therapist can help you talk about what you each want and discuss the focus of your sessions.

How many sessions will we need?

This depends on your needs and goals. Some couples come with one issue to work through. Others need more time to address hurt or patterns that have built up over years.

Your therapist will discuss this with you and check how things are going along the way.

Do we need to be married to come to therapy?

No. We work with married couples and unmarried partners. Whether you are looking for marriage counselling or support with another stage of your relationship, you are welcome to get in touch.

Can happy couples benefit from therapy?

Yes. You can come to couples counseling even when your relationship feels strong. You may want to prepare for becoming parents, discuss a big decision, or work through a concern before it grows.
