What Does Child Therapy Cost in Copenhagen? A Guide for Parents

When you’re worried about your child, you want to understand what support might help and whether you can afford it. The cost of a therapy appointment is a useful starting point, but you’ll also want to know whether parent meetings are charged separately and how often you might need to attend.

At Village Therapy, appointments with our child psychologist start at 800 DKK per session. You can contact us to ask which appointment type would be appropriate and what it costs.

What does the cost include?

Child therapy can involve appointments with your child, meetings with parents, or a combination of both. Before booking, ask about the length of each appointment and how much those different sessions cost.

It’s also worth clarifying whether the cost includes any contact with your child’s school or daycare, written summaries, or other work outside appointments. Psychological assessments may have separate fees.

Having these details upfront makes it easier to compare services and plan your budget.

How many therapy appointments will your child need?

We may need an initial conversation or assessment before we can suggest a plan. Sometimes parents are looking for guidance with a particular difficulty. Other families need ongoing support for their child.

You can discuss the expected appointment frequency, agree on when to review progress, and ask what you can do at home between sessions.

If you have a limited budget, say so early. That helps us have an honest conversation about what we can offer and whether another service might better meet your needs.

Are there public options?

Public and municipal support may be available, depending on your child’s needs and the service. Your GP, school, daycare, or municipality can help you explore the relevant options, including PPR, the educational psychology service.

Child and adolescent psychiatric services have their own referral and assessment processes. A GP referral does not automatically make appointments with a private child psychologist free.

Before booking privately, check the payment arrangements with the provider.

Can insurance cover child therapy costs?

Some health insurance policies include psychological support for children. Check whether your child is covered under your own policy or needs separate coverage.

Give the insurer the details of the psychologist you want to see and ask:

  • Do we need a referral or approval before starting?

  • How many appointments are covered?

  • Are parent consultations covered too?

  • Do we pay upfront and claim reimbursement?

It’s best to confirm this before the first appointment so you know what you’ll need to pay.

Should you start privately?

That depends on what your child needs, the support already available, and your family’s budget. An initial consultation can help you understand the concern and consider whether child therapy, parent guidance, school support, or further assessment would be useful.

You can describe what you’re noticing without having a diagnosis or a clear explanation. For example, your child may be refusing school, becoming increasingly withdrawn, or getting upset in ways you’re finding difficult to help with.
