Somatic and yoga-based practices in therapy

Stress and emotion often arrive in the body before you can put them into words. You may feel restless, shut down, tense, or disconnected from physical sensations altogether. Gentle body-based practices can help you notice what is happening and find ways to feel more grounded.

A clinician may invite you to try breath, movement, or simple awareness exercises alongside conversation. This is collaborative: you can decline an exercise, change it, or stop at any point. You do not need to be flexible, experienced with yoga, or comfortable with a particular pose.

The exact practices depend on the therapist's training. They are ways of supporting the therapeutic work, not a promise that a single exercise will resolve a complex problem.

Next step: Ask which clinician offers somatic or yoga-based work and what sessions involve.
