Is Therapy Free in Denmark? A Quick Guide for Internationals
- Ariel Andersen
- Life Abroad
The Danish healthcare system is excellent, but it also confuses the hell out of internationals.
If you’re searching “is therapy free in Denmark?” here’s the short, clear answer:
Yes… but only for specific situations.
Here’s how it works:
1. Publicly Funded Therapy (with a læge referral)
This is free ONLY IF you meet specific criteria:
You can get subsidized sessions if you:
recently lost a close family member
were a victim of violence
survived a serious accident
have mild to moderate depression
have mild to moderate anxiety
are between 18–24 (more coverage available)
But:
wait times are long (2–6 months or longer)
many psychologists don’t accept public referrals
therapy is almost always in Danish or English as a second language
sessions are short and limited, usually you only are granted 6-12 sessions.
2. Private Therapy (most common among expats and internationals)
Most internationals choose private therapy because:
no referral is needed
no waitlists
you choose your therapist
you get specialized care (CBT, ERP, EMDR)
Prices usually range 1,000–1,100 DKK per session.
3. Does Insurance Cover Therapy?
It depends on the policy.
Some expat plans cover:
trauma therapy
child therapy
EMDR
Always check your insurance fine print.
4. Why Most Expats and Internationals Go Private
Because they want:
English
flexibility
no wait time
specialized treatment
someone who understands life abroad
And because emotions don’t wait for paperwork.
