Child Psychologist vs. Child Psychiatrist in Copenhagen: What’s the Difference?
- Ariel Andersen
- Children & Teens
Google loves to mix up psychologists and psychiatrists. Parents get confused, which is completely understandable.
Here’s an explanation that will help clear things up.
Child Psychologist (Psykolog)
A child psychologist:
provides therapy
works with emotions, behaviors, and coping
supports parents with tools and strategies
helps with anxiety, emotional regulation, transitions, and relational issues
does not prescribe medication
They’re ideal for most childhood emotional and behavioral struggles.
Child Psychiatrist (Børnepsykiater)
A child psychiatrist:
is a medical doctor
can diagnose clinical psychiatric disorders
can prescribe medication
usually works with more severe or complex cases
often operates within the public system (high wait times)
Psychiatrists are for safety concerns, severe depression, complicated neurodevelopmental issues, or when medication is needed.
So… who do you actually need?
If your child is struggling with:
anxiety
tantrums
separation issues
social stress
school worries
emotional overwhelm
adjustment to Denmark
→ A child psychologist is where to start.
If your child:
has suicidal thoughts
shows signs of psychosis
needs medication
→ A child psychiatrist is the right route.
Most families start with a psychologist, and if needed, get referred onward.
Here at Village Therapy, starting in January 2026, we will have an authorised child psychologist joining the practice. Email info@villagetherapy.dk to get on the waitlist or book here after January 15, 2026.
